The Quickest P.S.A.
The thing about paywalls is...
I have a complicated relationship with paywalls, as for most of my life I didn’t have the coins needed to gain access. And on the days that I did, there was always some greater need that required my attention.
I understand their practicality; as in some cases what we do here is a form of undressing ourselves, laying our emotions bare and allowing room for critique. There are parts of us reserved for the vested, nuance and context are often lost in the eyes of random onlookers. Paywalls are a great indicator of buy-in and continuity.
There is also the reality that art is work and should be compensated as such. This is valid, incredibly so… yet, I just don’t feel like that tax needs to rest squarely on the pockets of folks who sit in similar circumstances.
Paid subscriptions are a tangible sign of support, and they are appreciated, if you have the capacity to commit to it. They also allows me the opportunity to pass the blessing forward, subscribing to the work of others. The work will always continue, there will be no shortage or written thoughts, I just happen to be in a position where art isn’t my primary breadwinner. With this, I have the privilege of not worrying about art revenue as much.
With that said; everyone will have access, this means a lot to me. It’s also never made sense for me to do the exhaustive work of writing just to limit who can read it.
